Are you looking for a unique opportunity to directly influence the health & safety culture at our Commerce City refinery? Join our Environmental Health & Safety (EHS or EH&S) team at our Commerce City refinery, which is the largest refinery in the Rocky Mountain region and the only petroleum refinery in Colorado. Working with multiple internal stakeholders in operations, maintenance, engineering, turnaround, as well as external contractors, you will maintain workplace health and safety by identifying, evaluating, and controlling exposure to occupational health hazards including chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, and physiological.

As the Industrial Hygienist, you will act as product safety liaison to the business and steward standards, guidelines, processes, and procedures with the aim of minimizing the risk of illness as a result of worker exposure to hazards. You will assist in the development and implementation of programs and processes that support the business and Suncors enterprise wide industrial (occupational) hygiene requirements.

Minimum Requirements:

Five years of work experience within the Industrial Hygiene (IH) field

Bachelors degree or diploma in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related environmental field

Previous experience in a refinery, petrochemical or other industrial setting preferred

Advanced knowledge in identifying hazards and controls specific to processes and activities in work areas and/or environmental aspects and a continuous improvement mindset

Working knowledge of industrial health and safety legislation, product safety, chemical management, community response (e.g. noise/odors, etc.), case management, etc.

Experience conducting hazard assessments, incident investigations, analyses, audits and self-assessments

Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements

Skilled technical writing and presentation skills to report monitored results to management

Intermediate to advanced level proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

A valid drivers with a driving record acceptable to Suncor

A valid passport, as international travel may be required

Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation or membership in good standing of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) would be considered an asset


Conduct workplace assessments to identify, quantify and control risk to people, property and equipment to identify and mitigate potential site chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, and physiological issues

Provide technical support to site EHS peers with evaluation of health hazards, recommend mitigations, and validate effectiveness of implementation

Interpret and apply IH processes (including respiratory protection, hearing protection, radiation safety, etc.) and validate organizational compliance

Develop IH governing documents

Represent Suncor and Health & Wellness at committees/associations and interface with regulatory authorities

Coordinate or supervise work with external consultants and ensure their safety when at site

Ensure privacy and confidentiality processes are followed to maintain confidentiality of health and exposure records

Plan and complete site-level IH projects

Location and other Key Details:

You will work out of our Commerce City refinery, located at 5801 Brighton Blvd.

Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs, including being on-call as appropriate and potentially working night shifts as necessary during large scale outages, turnarounds, and/or emergencies

You will be required to use ladders and work on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers with the ability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces

Salary and Compensation Details:

Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work

$100,000 to $110,000 annual salary and an annual incentive program
